The essentials

Making lists is an activity moviegoers are fond of. Every year, the same ritual: compilation of the ten best films, with comparative analyses, debates, heated discussions. But what about the ultimate list of the most outstanding films in the history of cinema? That is to say, those films that must be seen, those that have forever transformed the art of cinema, but also our way of seeing a culture, of understanding the world as well as our own lives? This program aims to tackle this challenge with nearly eighty films, produced between 1916 and 1960, while waiting for your lists!

The Bigamist

Ida Lupino

Born in 1918 into a family that had been involved in the performing arts for generations, Ida Lupino grew up and made her acting debut in England before leaving to try her luck in Hollywood. She multiplies the roles from the 1930s and knows a great success in the 1940s, playing over time for Raoul Walsh, Delmer Daves, Nicholas Ray, Robert Aldrich, Fritz Lang and many others. But her success as an actress did not quite fulfill her: she was mainly interested in directing and founded the production company The Filmmakers with her husband, Collier Young. In 1949, she directed her first film, Not Wanted, becoming the following year the only woman in the film directors' union. In a few years, she forcefully imposed a voice of a filmmaker apart: because of the rarity of her gaze, her characters and her themes in a male industry as well as her remarkable mastery of staging and tension, which led her to be the first woman to direct a film noir with The Hitch-Hiker.
