Since the heyday of Romanticism, gallant ghosts have haunted our imaginations. Sometimes troubling, sometimes amusing, they have crossed continents and eras, as well as film genres, as the films gathered here bear witness. Evanescent and elusive, these romantic ghosts are of course a source of fantasy, but they also inhabit cinema marvelously well, where they defy time, genre and mise-en-scène, between appearance and disappearance.
Fifty years after her death, a woman returns to haunt Hong Kong and to find the man she loved more than anything. Set against a historical backdrop and reflecting on the passage of time, the film's melancholy mirrors that of Hong Kong, a few years before the return to China.
Stanley Kwan
Stanley Kwan is a director and producer from Hong Kong. Kwan was hired by TVB after graduating from Hong Kong Baptist College with a degree in communications. Kwan's first film Women (1985), starring Chow Yun-fat, was a box-office hit. Best known for Rouge (1987), Full Moon in New York (1989), Center Stage (1992; aka Actress ) and Everstanding Regret (2005). His film Red Rose White Rose (1994) an adaptation of a novel by Eileen Chang was screened at the 45th Berlin International Film Festival. His 1998 film Hold You Tight won the Alfred Bauer Prize and the Teddy Award at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival.
