Inspired by a true story from the 1950s, the film tells the story of François (Chico) Tremblay, an average Quebecer who once belonged to the local underworld and finds himself confronted by the almighty American mafia. More than a thriller, the film has a social and ideological significance that enables a multi-layered reading and a socio-political analysis of an urban phenomenon: Quebec gangsterism.

By his own admission a bit of a dabbler (touche-à-tout), Godbout has become one of the most important writers of his generation,[citation needed] with a major influence on post-1960 Quebec intellectual life.
