The Cinémathèque throws open its doors during Montréal Museums Day
Montréal, May 4, 2010 – The Cinémathèque québécoise will offer a variety of exciting activities for the entire family during the 24th Montreal Museums Day, to be held Sunday, May 30, 2010. On this day of cultural effervescence in Montréal, the Cinémathèque will offer free access to its exhibits and programming, several of which touch on the art of glass-making. As such, numerous activities are planned throughout the day. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch, in the Cinémathèque’s Salle Claude-Jutra, an excerpt of the film Ferron, Marcelle, directed by Monique Crouillère and produced by the NFB in 1989. The film looks at artist Marcelle Ferron, one of whose signature works is the stained-glass window at the Champs-de-Mars Métro station in Montréal. In the Salle Fernand-Seguin, the Cinémathèque will screen the documentary short Jardins célestes d’Annie Cantin, directed in 2007 by Mourit Raki and Nejma Chebah, which explores the work the Québec glass artist created while living in France. It’s a delightful and colourful “garden” the whole family will enjoy. In terms of exhibits, the immersive installation Panoscope 360°, Immersion soleil couchant (après Monet) will be the feature attraction in the Salle Norman McLaren, and visitors will have the opportunity to meet its creator, Luc Courchesne, from 1 to 3 p.m. on May 30. In addition, children and adults alike will be enthralled by the long-term exhibits Do Not Adjust Your Set!, which features a marvellous collection of old TV sets, and Formes en mouvement, which looks at animation. Several activities offering visitors a chance to win door prizes will complement the exhibits. The Cinémathèque’s warm and welcoming Café-Bar will also have a part to play during Museums Day. Not only will visitors be able to drop by the café to recharge their batteries as they get their cultural fill, they’ll also be able to watch three NFB-produced shorts featuring paint-on-glass animation. The films will be shown on the Café-Bar’s screen—to the sure delight of movie-lovers. For complete programming details: www.cinematheque.qc.ca.
